I found the chapters dealing with the Gallipoli campaign particularly powerful.

A huge thank-you to Chrissie in the All About Books group for her fantastic review which lead me to read this unforgettable novel. As a lover of history, anthropology, good storytelling, and especially Turkish culture, this book satisfied me and then some. I wasn’t sure if I would understand it. I must have missed those days that story was taught in my history classes.

Both exotically remote and tragically relevant. The author introduces us to a village of characters and when the war is declared and the outside world intruded the twin scourges of religion and nationalism lead to forced marches and massacres and the peaceful fabric of life is destroyed. Some of us walk detached, dreaming on the past, and some of us realize that we have lost the trick of standing in the sun.


The writing, the characters, the setting and the history is all impeccably crafted. Istanbul was the hub of this broken-felloed wheel, and there could be found epitomised the fantastical bedlam and babel, which, although no one realised it at the time, was destined to be the model and precursor of all the world’s great metropoles a hundred years hence, by which Istanbul would, paradoxically, have lost its cosmopolitan brilliance entirely.
